CineKink Announces Festival Awards, Gives Tribute to "Swingtown" and "CSI"
NEW YORK, NY; March 3, 2009 - Rounding out multiple days of screenings and parties in its sixth annual appearance, organizers for CineKink NYC/2009 announced the recipients of awards in a range of categories during the film festival's closing celebrations held on Sunday, March 1, 2009.
"We had an unusual number of ties this year," noted Lisa Vandever, CineKink co-founder and director, as she presented the awards. "The quality of the selections in the festival was so consistently high this season, we created a lot of difficult choices for both jurors and audiences in determining the awards. My thanks to all of the filmmakers for allowing us to share their amazing works."
Audience Choice Awards were given to "The Auteur" (James Westby) for Best Narrative Feature and to "Graphic Sexual Horror" (Barbara Bell & Anna Lorentzon) and "Kinky" (A. Benjamin), tied for Best Documentary Feature. Honorable Mentions went to the documentaries "Happy Endings?" (Tara Hurley) and "Sex Positive" (Daryl Wein). The choice awards were determined by audience ballot just following each eligible film's screening during the festival.
In the shorts competition, juried festival awards went to "Kink, Inc." (Casey Clark) and to "Matinee" (Jennifer Lyon Bell), tied for Best Narrative Short, "Serving Madame Gina" (Gabriele Hoff) for Best Documentary Short, "Teat Beat of Sex: 8-11" (Signe Baumane) for Best Animated Short, "At the Porno Shop" (Michael Rehfield) for Best Musical Short and, tied for the Best Experimental Short award, "Erotic Moments" (Eva Midgley) and "Un Piede di Roman Polanski" (Lauren Wissot and Roxanne Kapitsa). Honorable Best Mention awards went to "Belle de Nature" (Maria Beatty), "BDSM: It's Not What You Think" (Erin Palmquist) and "Rubberheart" (Brian Crano).
Determining the shorts awards, CineKink jurors this year included Steven Speliotis, an alumni CineKink filmmaker, along with returning jurors Viviane, ring-leader of the sex blog "Viviane's Sex Carnival," and Bill Woods, a film festival programmer and curator of the New Filmmakers series at Anthology Film Archives.
The CineKink Tribute, recognizing extraordinary depictions of kink and sex-positivity in mainstream film and television, was presented to two works this year. The first was given to the short-lived television series "Swingtown" (CBS) for its "refreshingly upbeat presentation of non-monogamy and the swinging lifestyle as simply another type of relationship choice among many possibilities," while the second went to "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation" (CBS) for its "respectful and non-sensationalistic depiction of professional domination in the guise of lead character Grissom's long-time love-interest, Lady Heather."
Honorable mentions for the CineKink Tribute went to the movie "Burn After Reading" (Focus Features) and to the television series "How I Met Your Mother" (CBS). Works eligible for consideration this year were those released or aired in the United States from January 1, 2008 until December 31, 2008.
Making its sixth annual run February 24-March 1, 2009, CineKink NYC featured a specially selected program of films and videos that celebrate and explore a wide diversity of sexuality. Billing itself as "the really alternative film festival," the event is dedicated to the recognition and encouragement of sex-positive and kink-friendly depictions in film and television. With offerings drawn from both Hollywood and beyond, works presented at CineKink NYC ranged from documentary to drama, camp comedy to hot pornography, mildly spicy to quite explicit - and everything in between.
Selections from CineKink NYC will be featured in a traveling version of the festival, slated to appear in various cities throughout the coming year.

"CINEKINK CHOICE" - AUDIENCE CHOICE AWARDS
CineKink Choice awards, which go to feature-length works in competition during the festival, were determined by audience balloting at the close of each eligible work's screening. The 2009 award winners are:
CineKink Choice Award for Best Narrative Feature:
"The Auteur" (James Westby, 2008, USA, 80 minutes)
A mélange of romantic comedy and raunchy satire set in the world of adult film, this is the story of renowned porn director Arturo Domingo, the creative genius behind classics like 'Five Easy Nieces' and 'Requiem for a Wet Dream,' who has arrived in Portland, Oregon to receive a Lifetime Achievement award at a film festival. (Stars Melik Malkasian, John Breen and Katherine Flynn.)
CineKink Choice Award for Best Documentary Feature:
"Graphic Sexual Horror" (Barbara Bell & Anna Lorentzon, 2008, USA, 86 minutes)
Takes a long peek behind the imposing facade of Insex.com, the most notorious of bondage websites, to explore the dark mind of its artistic creator and ask hard questions about personal and responsibility.

"Kinky" (A. Benjamin, 2008, USA, 46 minutes)
This sometimes light-hearted, sometimes thought-provoking look at issues affecting the sexuality of Black Americans, touches on religion, racism and relationships as it delves into the fascinating world of bondage, fetish and BDSM.
CineKink Choice Award - Honorable Mentions:
"Happy Endings?" (Tara Hurley, 2007, USA, 81 minutes)
An intriguing exploration of the Asian massage parlor industry in Providence, Rhode Island, where a 25-year-old loophole has made the exchange of sex for money legal--as long as it happens behind closed doors.
"Sex Positive" (Daryl Wein, 2008, USA, 78 minutes)
The absorbing story of Richard Berkowitz, one time S/M hustler turned activist, who moved to New York City in the hedonistic late 1970s and, after contracting AIDS, worked avidly on bringing attention to the illness and on developing an understanding of safer sex practices.

CineKink Best Narrative Short:
"Kink, Inc." (Casey Clark, 2008, USA, 27 minutes)
Struggling to make ends meet, a young couple answers a help-wanted ad and unwittingly sets forth on a career path in 'home domination.' Their lost love is rekindled as they explore the playful sensuality of the training process, but they are ill prepared when a very real client arrives and makes demands of these S/M novices.

"Matinee" (Jennifer Lyon Bell, 2009, Netherlands, 34 minutes)
Actors Mariah and Daniel play lovers every night, but their onstage romance lacks spark. One slow afternoon, they discover that today's matinée performance will make or break both of their careers.
CineKink Best Documentary Short:
"Serving Madame Gina" (Gabriele Hoff, PsyD, 2008, USA, 25 minutes)
Living together in a Master/slave relationship, Madame Gina treats her "property" to occasional dungeon scenes that include floggings and bondage, but most of their 24/7 situation centers around Mercedes's role as servant, Lady-in-Waiting, maid and house-slave.
CineKink Best Experimental Short:
"Erotic Moments" (Eva Midgley, 2008, United Kingdom, 20 minutes)
A series of vignettes based on the stories of real people, portraying their secret sexual desires and most erotic moments.

An unsuspecting customer gets a musical tour of his local porno shop.
CineKink Honorable Best Mentions:

A documentary that confronts stigma and stereotype surrounding kink and fetish play through leading voices within the BDSM community.

Beautiful Clara gives her over her tender flesh to the whimsical subjugations of nature.

FESTIVAL AWARD FOR EXTRAORDINARY MAINSTREAM DEPICTION OF KINK & SEX-POSITIVITY
Recognizing extraordinary depiction of kink and sex-positivity in mainstream film and television, the annual CineKink Tribute was presented this year to two CBS television series:
The first CineKink Tribute went to the short-lived "Swingtown" for its "refreshingly upbeat presentation of non-monogamy and the swinging lifestyle as simply another type of relationship choice among many possibilities." Created by Mike Kelley, who was also a series executive producer along with Alan Poul and Carol Barbee; the show debuted on CBS on June 5, 2008 as a summer replacement series and is said to have been championed by network president Nina Tasler.
The second CineKink Tribute went to "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation" for its "respectful and non-sensationalistic depiction of professional domination in the guise of lead character Grissom's long-time love-interest, Lady Heather." Created by Anthony E. Zuicker, the series first broadcast on October 6, 2000. Writer Jerry Stahl is credited with creating the Lady Heather character, who was introduced during the series' second season in the episode 'Slaves of Las Vegas' and is portrayed by actress Melinda Clarke.
Honorable mentions for the CineKink Tribute went to the movie "Burn After Reading" (Focus Features) and to the television series "How I Met Your Mother" (CBS).
Works eligible for consideration this year were those released or aired in the United States from January 1, 2008 until December 31, 2008.
